Safety glass was designed to protect humans from injury from broken glass.
The Australian Standards board updated the standards for glass and glazing in buildings in 2006. The code for glass in buildings is AS1288.
There are two main types of safety glass:
* Laminated safety glass is two pieces of glass bonded together with a layer of poly vinyl butal which provides its safety feature. Both pieces of glass need to be broken before it poses a safety risk.
* Toughened Safety glass is glass which has been heated to high temperature and cooled quickly and tempered. It’s very strong and when broken it breaks into smallpieces designed not to cause serious injury.
